Day 1. Arrive in Reykjavik. Explore Downtown

Fly into Keflavik International Airport, where your guide meets you and provides a private transfer to downtown Reykjavik (approx. 1 hour). Check into your hotel and explore the downtown area or rest away from any jetlag. In case you arrive in the early morning (which is typical for flights from the United States), downtown Reykjavik has some great coffee shops.

Things to do in Reykjavik:

  • Walkеthrough the compact Reykjavik center and familiarize yourself with the charm of the city.
  • Head to the waterfront to see the Sun Voyager sculpture and Harpa Concert Hall with its cool glass architecture.
  • Visit the Hallgrimskirkja church on the hill and take the elevator at the tower for panoramic views of the Reykjavik area.
  • In the event of inclement weather, visit several museums such as the Northern Lights Center, Saga Museum, Maritime Museum, or Iceland’s Whale Exhibition.

Driving distance 50km / 32miles. Overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Day 2. Snæfellsnes Peninsula. West Iceland

In the morning we start from Reykjavik and drive north-west. We pass through the tunnel under the Hvalfjordur fjord and stop in the lovely village of Borgarnes, surrounded by reefs and mountains.

Then we drive toward the Bjarnarfoss waterfall, falling from a cliff and flowing down a steep slope into the valley. After a short walk to the waterfall, we drive to the nearby located ancient church in Budir. This church in Budir fits perfectly into the gorgeous panoramic views around. From there, we take a short walk to the ocean coast, framed by yellow volcanic sand and black lava rocks.

The most iconic and mysterious attraction of the Snaefellsnes peninsula is the magical Snaefellsjokull glacier with a powerful volcano under the ice cup. This volcano is one of the most famous places in Iceland. Mystics believe that there is a special energy field at the volcano. Without a doubt, this place is amazing, and local landscapes will surprise even seasoned travelers.

Next, we will stop at Arnarstapi, a small fishing village with a small harbor and rock arch Gatklettur. The whole rocky coast in Arnarstapi is so beautiful that it is worth getting here alone for it.

Further, we will go to Londrangar rocky cliffs at the southern foot of the Snaefellsjokull volcano. The Londrangar are unique rock formations, the product of ancient eruptions became the ocean cliff. Many sea birds are nesting on these rocks in the summertime.

And of course, we visit Djupalonsandur, black pebbled beach with remains of a wrecked trawler and mysterious cliffs overlooking the ocean. In the old days, the beach used as a fishing station where rowing boats moored, and people processed the caught fish on the shore.

Next, we drive to the north coast of the peninsula toward the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall at the foot of Kirkjufell mountain. The mountain is one of the most “photogenic” places on the peninsula, attracting a large number of photographers, regardless of the season.

Next, we will go through the Vatnaleid pass to the southern part of the peninsula and return to Reykjavik (or Borgarnes).

Duration of 10-11 hours. Driving distance 440km / 270miles. Overnight stay in Reykjavik (or Borgarnes)

Day 3. Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon

We start our first day on the Golden Circle route, including three famous attractions: Thingvellir National park, the Geyser valley, the Gullfoss waterfall, and some others.

The first stop, Thingvellir, is famous for its geological matter as the boundary between American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and it is also widely known for being a place for the first parliament in the world. It was founded by the locals in the year 930 AD and hold sessions until 1798.

The next stop is the Haukadalur geothermal area, where you will find Strokkur hot spring. It is the biggest active geyser in Iceland that shoots hot water as high as 20-30 meters (65-100ft) and it happens approx. every 5-10 minutes.

To cool down, we continue the drive to Gullfoss waterfall, the second largest waterfall in Iceland. In the summer we can walk at the lower path, where you stand close enough to the falls, and feel fresh mist touching your face. In the winter, we are not able to reach that close, but we can still enjoy the scenery from the distance.

At this point, we are done with three main attractions of the famous Golden Circle route. However, our tour is not finished yet, if we are not running out of time, we would be heading to the south to visit Fridheimar tomato greenhouse for lunch.

To top up the experiences, we are going to make a stop at the Secret Lagoon, it is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. In the surrounding area of the pool, you will find many rising steams, it makes this place more magical.

At the end of the day, we shall head to the place of an overnight stay in Hella, Selfoss, or coming back to Reyjavik.

Duration: 9-10 hours. Driving distance 250km / 156miles. Overnight stay in Reykjavik (or Hella)

Day 4. South Coast: Waterfalls, Beaches & Cliffs. Return to Reykjavik

We depart from Reykjavik and drive through the Hellisheidi mountain pass, along with rough lava fields and jets of steam from the geothermal power plant at footage of the Hengill volcano. Further, we drive through the lowlands and make a short stop at the gas station in Hvolsvollur, and then continue driving toward the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland. It is 63 meters tall and breathtakingly beautiful. It offers a fantastic walking on the path behind, especially on a sunny day when one can catch a rainbow. In wintertime, the path is closed when it gets too slippery. We shall find another waterfall called Gljufrabui, near the Seljalandsfoss. Gljufrabui is 40 meters high waterfall, falling into the gorge, with beautiful scenery inside.

Next, we drive to the east alongside farms, located under the former sea cliffs of the Eyjafjoll area, and arrive at the mighty Skogafoss waterfall, cascading down 60 meters (200 feet) with water running from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This majestic waterfall is one of the most visited sites in Iceland and for a good reason. After visiting the waterfall, we recommend making a stop for lunch at Bistro Bar in Skogar.

Then we shall visit Dyrholaey, a rocky cape extending into the ocean in the southernmost part of the country. The roaring Atlantic Ocean and its foamy waves wash the black sands at the foot of Dyrholaey. From there, you can enjoy the diverse and fantastic landscapes of the Myrdalur valley, fresh green fields, and pastures.

We shall continue our journey and stop for a walk along the shore of Reynisfjara beach near the Vik village. It is widely considered the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland, with an amazing cliff of vertically shifted basalt columns resembling a stone step pyramid called Gardar. Going out to sea, you will see the stunning shape of Reynisdrangar basaltic stacks. However, beware of powerful waves and do not get too close to the water.

From the black sand beach, we drive toward Reykjavik and make a stop at Solheimajokull glacier, the outlet of Myrdalsjokull glacier, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. There is a path from the parking lot for reaching the glacier. We can walk there closed to the ice to enjoy the view of the glacier from a short distance. From Solheimajokull glacier, we drive about two hours back to Reykjavik.

Duration 10 hours. Driving distance 400km / 250miles.

Day 6. Morning in Reykjavik. Blue Lagoon. Departure

Today is a time for your Iceland adventure to end. Check out from your hotel in Reykjavik and enjoy a private transfer to Keflavik Airport. If you’re flying in the afternoon, you have the option to visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa to relax in the warm mineral waters before continuing to the airport (optional, not included).

The Blue Lagoon is recognized as one of National Geographic’s 25 “wonders of the world” and is a unique source of geothermal seawater. The temperature of the water in Blue Lagoon stays the same all year, around 38°-40°C (100°-104°F). Afterward, head to the airport to board your flight back home after some wonderful days in Iceland and memories you’ll never forget. Goodbye for now!

Duration 1 hour. Driving distance 50km/32miles.

Accommodation is included in the tour package. The cost of accommodation and the price of the tour depending on the chosen category (comfort or quality), as well as the time of year you visit Iceland (low/shoulder/high tourist season). The price per person specified in the tour description is calculated when four adults together accommodate in two double comfort rooms during the low tourist season or shoulder season if a tour is not provided during the low season. Please note that accommodation can be changed at your request to rooms of a higher category. If you plan to stay in Iceland longer than the duration of the tour, for example, to add a day before or after the tour, please notice that in the application form.

Hotels in Reykjavik and around Iceland

Reykjavik is a convenient place to stay during the trip, as it is the capital and a very lively and hospitable city. In the city center, there are many small hotels 3*-4* and guesthouses, which are conveniently located for evening walks and visiting local restaurants. For multi-day tours, we recommend staying at hotels fitted to the route. That allows to minimize road overlapping and extend traveling area outside of Reykjavik. It is less choice of lodging places in the countryside and most of the hotels are three-star. It is better to book accommodation in advance, especially for the summertime, otherwise, it will be difficult to find conveniently located hotels at an affordable price.

Tourist seasons

High season: June 1 — August 31; December 30 — January 2

Shoulder season: May 1 — May 31; September 1 — October 31

Low season: November 1 — December 29; January 3 — April 30

The high tourist season in Iceland is quite short, from June to the end of August. Most tourists visit the country in the summer months, and the maximum load for hotels, rental companies, tour operators reaches in July and August. Lodging and rental prices at this time are almost doubling compared to the low season, and availability may be limited. Therefore, we recommend booking a summer tour a few months before the trip.

Accommodation Type

Comfort: Standard rooms with separate bathroom and shower (or bath) in a three-star hotel or comfortable guesthouse. Breakfast is included.

Quality: High-quality rooms with separate bathroom and shower (or bath). A superior room in a three-star hotel or a standard room in a four-star hotel. Breakfast is included

In all tour package with a level of comfort or higher, you will have a separate bathroom in the booked rooms. Breakfast is always on.

Double rooms in most Icelandic hotels are rooms with two single beds. In most cases, two single beds can be put into a double bed. However, this can vary between hotels/guesthouses. Triple rooms are in most cases double rooms with an extra bed, so when you install an extra bed, space can be limited. You can choose a combination of rooms when booking.

Children under 2 years old get free accommodation if they live in the same room as their parents. Families with one child are advised to book 3 persons in a double room. This room can accommodate an extra bed or mattress if the available room is too small to accommodate an extra bed. Two adults and two children book two double rooms. Children living in a separate room pay the full cost. When one adult travels with one child, the full cost of a double room is charged.

Chek-In time and early arrival

Check-in time for accommodation in Iceland is usually from 14:00 to 16:00. Some hotels offer early check-in for a minimum fee. However, it depends on the hotel and room availability. The only way to ensure an early check-in is to also book the night before. However, if the room is ready, you can check-in sooner.

Hotel booking changes

If you want to change the hotel, we will do everything possible to change your stay in the hotel. Please note that due to low availability and high demand in summer we cannot guarantee some hotels. If you want to book a particular hotel, we will naturally do our best to provide it to you, but keep in mind that there may be an additional charge.

WI-FI and Internet connection in hotels

Most hotels and guest houses in Iceland provide free access to wi-fi internet. Some hotels and guesthouses may charge a small fee for internet access.
